Senior Life Institute - Back Yard Birds

Highland Presbyterian Church's Senior Life Institute invited me to present a program on my bird photography.  Due to the pandemic, we could not meet in person.  So Josh Witmer was kind enough to record my presentation and post it to Highland's YouTube channel.

I shared photographs captured at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, Wissahickon Creek, Chestnut Grove Nature Area, the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River, and Brubaker Run, among others.  All of these locations are less than an hour's drive from my home, so I consider all of these magnificent creatures my "back yard birds"!

Rome
Rome is a fantastically beautiful city. The Metropolitan City of Rome has a population of 4.3 million residents. Vatican City is an independent country within the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states. Rome's history spans more than two and a half thousand years. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at only around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.

Isla Guadalupe
Isla Guadalupe is a volcanic island off the west coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The island is 200 nautical miles southwest of the city of Ensenada in the Pacific Ocean. Guadalupe is considered one of the best places in the world to observe the Great White Shark. It's blue waters are known for outstanding visibility.

SCUBA diving is not permitted here.  The experience is enjoyed from the safety of a shark cage lowered from the stern of the boat.  Surface air is supplied via a hookah.  It's the only sane way to be in the water with the Great White Shark!

Breaching Humpback Whale.Often times when least expected, a Humpback Whale will breach, launching its massive body from the water in a display of power and grace. No one knows why a whale chooses to breach - to communicate it's position to other whales? to rid itself of dead skin and parasites? to express excitement? Some suggest a whale breaches because it can!
