American Bald Eagles

One of my newest passions is wildlife photography, and there is no subject I like photographing more than the magnificent American Bald Eagle!

I am fortunate to live less than an hour away from the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in Maryland.  Conowingo is the east coast mecca for observing Bald Eagles.  The hydroelectric generation plant keeps the water below the dam from freezing even in the coldest weather.  From October through December there are typically hundreds of birds in the area.  And the river is a plentiful source of fresh fish!

Enjoy a gallery of images that have won national and international awards over the years!  My earliest photos were taken on Kodak Ektachrome film with a Nikonos amphibious underwater camera.  I later made the transition to digital photography with Nikon DSLR's in Aquatica housings.

I am honored to receive an honorable mention award in this year's Ward Museum Art in Nature Photo Festival!

My entry was captured on Market Street in center city Philadelphia, and is titled "Philly Nightscape".

 Exelon 2020 Bald Eagle Photo Contest Award

My image received the Photographer's Choice Award in this year's contest!

It was taken on Fisherman's Wharf below the Conowingo Dam, and captured the bird we nicknamed Scooter  successfully defending his fish from a challenging juvenile. 

Scooter perched in a sycamore tree on the bank of the river as he scanned the water below waiting for his opportunity.  I had seen him doing this on several occasions. This particular morning I waited for nearly an hour. I was ready to give up when in a flash, he dove to the water and snatched his breakfast.  

It's one thing to catch a fish.  It's quite another to keep it!  Scooter kept his fish!

 Crazy Horse Memorial

Puget Sound Journey magazine, published by AAA Washington, featured my photo of the Crazy Horse Memorial in their May/June 2019 issue.  It appeared with a story by Eric Lucas titled "Carved By History" featuring South Dakota's travel destinations.

 Lancaster County Art Association Award

My Rothenburg Doorway image took an honorable mention in the September 2018 exhibition!

Rothenburg was one of eight German cities visited in 2010.  The main objective of the tour was to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau.

My photo of Ursula Pemrose peering through the bridge window of the Shinkoku Maru was featured on the cover of the Alert Diver magazine in March 2001.

Alert Diver is the magazine of the Divers Alert Network, the industry's premier dive safety organization, headquartered in Durham, NC.

Commensal Emperor Shrimp and Tryon's Risbecia Nudibranch

Commensalism is a form of symbiosis where one species (the shrimp) benefits while its host (the nudibranch) gains no benefit but remains unharmed by the association. The shrimp hitches a ride while foraging the black sand bottom.

Mating Mandarinfish!

As dusk settles on the reef at Magic Pier in Buton Bay, the amazing mandarinfish emerge. A brief courtship dance is followed by pairs - in this case a threesome - slowly ascending in the water column. Then, in a flash of mandarinfish-love, it's all over!
